Speaker: Dan Stallings with Maverick Detection Services – Could not attend

Jack Horsley spoke about bees and colony collapse disorder. This was brought into light in 2006 when Dave Hackenberg who transports his bees from state to state to help pollinate crops noticed at the end of his route that about 3000 of his hives were empty after they had been overflowing just a few weeks earlier. This was noted around the world in all countries except Australia.  There are numerous reasons why this could be happening both human and non-human.  There are a number of pathogens and parasites that attach and attack the honey bees, however; the public is being prodded toward pesticides as the biggest contributing factor.  What can we do to help as an industry?  We can reduce stress to the insect.  If doing a mosquito control use a product safe for bees such as Mavrik.  Also do not spray the tops of the leaves but the underside with a mister is possible.  If you see active bees do not treat that bush wait and do it next time. Avoid blooming plants and treating during their foraging period.  Also use Larvacides whenever possible.
